Vic & Sue Thies
This garden railway is named the "Too Much Fun Railroad" and
that is a quite apt moniker. There is an over-abundance of fun things happening
on this large railroad everywhere you look. The entire backyard at the Thies
residence is devoted to trains with 1100 feet of track placed at six different
levels, and dozens of bridges crossing major streams that are fed from two large
waterfalls. Two ponds collect the water and offer refuge for koi and water
plants. The Too Much Fun RR also features a cog railway with a helix at both
ends, multiple point-to-point lines as well several loops of track that allow
long consists to be run. There is a suspended railway system over the patio with
a branch line that goes through the back wall of the house into the family room.
Most impressively, all of this work was completed in less than three years,
and there are plans for a Bryce Canyon scene on the upper level of the layout.
This will involve additional custom concrete work. Another feature of the Too
Much Fun RR is the extensive LED lighting (over 10,000 lights) that provide a
totally different appearance to the layout during evening operations.
